This year in numbers
Eight checks before you buy
Check who is really selling it
Many of this year’s notices are for products sold through online marketplaces by sellers you may never have heard of. Look for a UK address for the seller or importer, and prefer shops that take responsibility for what they sell.
Look for the marks and the address
Toys sold in Great Britain should carry a UKCA or CE mark and the name and address of the maker or importer. No marks and no address is a warning sign.
Button batteries and magnets
A swallowed button battery can burn through a child’s throat in hours, and two or more small magnets can pull together through the gut. Battery covers should need a screwdriver to open.
Think twice about water beads
Water beads swell when they get wet, and a swallowed bead can block a young child’s airway. Several were the subject of UK safety reports this year, one rated serious.
Sand-filled toys and craft sand
Several sand-filled squishy toys, sand art kits and packs of craft sand were recalled this year because the sand may contain asbestos. Search “sand” or the exact name below before you buy.
Chargers, e-bikes and e-scooters
Use the charger that came with the product, buy replacements from the manufacturer or a known retailer, and don’t charge e-bikes or e-scooters overnight or on an escape route.
Follow the age label
“Not suitable for children under 36 months” usually means small parts that can choke a baby or toddler. It is a safety warning, not a guide to how clever the child is.
Keep the receipt and register it
Registering a product, or saving it to My Products, means you hear about a recall instead of missing it. Keep receipts until after Christmas in case you need a refund.
Bought it already?
Save your gifts to My Products and we’ll email you if one is recalled later.
